Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil Review - For Oily Combination Skin

Dermalogica is a well known skincare brand whose products are used and sold in beauty salons and spa's worldwide. They aren't an overly expensive brand but they aren't the most affordable out there either. However the small handful of products i do own by them, i find the quality justifies the price tag. After weeks of seeing sneak peaks of the Phyto Replenish Oil i knew i wanted to try it! So, when their PR team contacted me asking if i wanted to try a sample, of course i jumped at the chance....

Lets Talk skin...

It's so strange to think that i used to see 'Oils' as the enemy, and i was unwelcoming to anything that contained the word 'Oil' in it. Now, i am a huge fan of oils and they have become a 'must have' staple in my beauty cabinet and skincare routine. Over the years there has been a lot of trial and error trying to find the right face oils for my combination skin and the Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil stormed right in and stole a place in my heart.

I've had oily skin pretty much my whole life, but it didn't bother me until i started wearing makeup in my late twenties. The result was larger pores, breakouts and uneven skin texture, because i was neglecting taking care of my skin under all the layers of makeup. Then i entered my thirties my skin started acting up big time! I suddenly had really dry patches of skin - around my nose, cheeks and under my eyes, as well as excess oil in the t-zone and acne break outs, for the first time in my life! My skin started to age and looked dull. So, I decided it was time to up my skincare game ( with recommendations from my dear friend Kelly ) and set out to bring my skin back to good health.

I decided to invest in the Pai Bioregenerate Rosehip Oil and my obsession with face oils grew from there. Since introducing oils and other great quality skincare products into my skincare routine, my skin has calmed down a lot and is now more balanced. I can still get a little oily in the t-zone area, especially when i am hot or flustered, but nowhere near as bad as it used to be. My skin is more hydrated and looks more healthy, plump ( taught, firm - however you want to word it ) and naturally dewy, but not greasy. Best of all oils have helped with the reduction of my acne breakouts and have even helped to reduce old scarring - in conjunction with BHA's - but more on them another time. I just love the nourishing and healing properties a face oil offers, the smells may not be as pleasing as say a moisturiser ( as it's not filled with fragrance, and they often have earthy natural scents ), but the results are worth it.

Incorporating and Oil into your routine

After a long day i like to relax by indulging my skin with luxurious products that help to remove the days dirt and leave my skin feeling soft and pampered, while my spirits are left relaxed and refreshed. A face oil can help achieve all of the above. If you are thinking about incorporating face oils into your beauty routine, the easiest way to introduce them is through your nighttime skincare routine. Not all oils will work for every skin type, and not all skin types need to use an oil in the daytime. I personally started with an oil cleanser and moved onto 'leave on' oils shortly after. Using oils at night can help prep your skin for the next day, because as we sleep our bodies regenerate and heal; So, we are able to fully absorb the nutrients much better. You can use a face oil two ways: either use as a single step in your nighttime regime ( after serum and before/after a moisturiser - depending on your skin type ) or you can mix your face oil in with your moisturiser.

The Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil

The Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil formula takes a three-phase approach that helps to replenish your skin from ageing and environmental stress. Phytoactives from Tamanu and Camellia oil ( two of my personal favourites ) help to restore and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. Orchid Flower and Chia Seed Oil help to smooth out visible lines and lock in moisture. Then Sunflower oil, Rice Bran and Rosemary Extracts help to create a luminous antioxidant-shield on the skin to protect it from free radical damage. Now that's my kind of oil.

First Impressions

I like that the oil is housed in an adorable little glass bottle, as opposed to their usual plastic packaging. Dermalogica always has basic but effective packaging. Though I personally prefer dropper applicators with my face oils, i find this feather-light oil dispenses really easily - unlike some other oils in my collection ( like Votary ) where I find myself having to shake the bottle for ages and end up removing the dispenser and having to pour into the palm of my hand. Doing this makes controlling the amount I pour out very difficult and it's also very messy.

My Experience

I have thoroughly enjoyed testing this oil out over the past few weeks, and have tested it both in the day and at night. With the change in British weather recently I've had the privilege of testing it in cold rainy weather and in extreme hot weather - you've got to love England's for giving you all seasons in a week lol. I haven't experienced any kind of irritation or breakouts at all - which some oils can do when i first start using them, since my skin can be a little sensitive and fussy at times. I like that it feels incredibly lightweight and doesn't feel at all greasy or like it's sitting heavy on my skin like some oils can do ( like Sunday Rileywhich I'm a huge fan of by the way ). It absorbs almost instantly into the skin without leaving any kind of greasy residue or sticky texture behind. My skin is left feeling soft and supple, while looking healthy and naturally dewy. After the small amount of time i have been using it i've noticed it has already helped reduce the redness and dryness i had around the crevices of my nose, and my skin feels and looks noticeably more hydrated and nourished. I find the scent of this oil lovely. It's like the lighter softer baby sister version of the MV Organics 9 Oil Cleansing Tonic - which gets it's delightfully beautiful scent from Camellia, Rosemary Extract and Sandalwood. To apply it i pour about 4 drops into the balms of my hand and gently press into my skin, starting from my cheeks ( my driest areas ) and then bringing onto the more oilier areas of my face ( my forehead and nose ), eventually taking down my neck. I also like to cup my hand over my nose and inhale a big deep breathe. I find doing this gives me a sensory experience and helps to relax my mind, plus the Rosemary Extract smells so divine.

Over time using this oil, you will find that you might need little coverage when it comes to your makeup-base, because your skin will look so much more radiant and healthy. This oil will help nourish, soothe and hydrating the skin. Most days i don't find that i need a moisturiser in conjunction with it. I have also mixed a couple of drops of the Phyto Replenish Oil in with some of my more fuller-coverage foundations, for a glowy, dewier look - it doesn't break down the formula and it also sits nicely underneath makeup. So far i am really impressed and I'm super excited to see more of the anti-ageing benefits it will have on my skin as i continue to use it over the next few months. I'm also intrigued to see how hydrating it will be on my skin as the temperature drops and my skin gets a little drier. Despite this oil being aimed towards those with Normal to Dry skin, i have combination skin and i don't find that it makes me more oily at all. The Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil is perfect for every day use or on those nights when your skin needs a little extra pampering.

Products are marked out of 5. With 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest....

Packaging | 3/5. The reason for this is because i love the sleek glass bottle and how easy the product comes out, but i find this leaks if not stood up straight ( it appears to be the same with all my other dermalogica oil products too ). I like a product that is travel friendly and can be thrown in a makeup bag if desired, but as this leaks its just too messy and impractical. A dropper would be much more convenient.

Consistency - 5/5. The consistency is beautiful. Its not a heavy and rich oil, but its not a dry oil either. It sits beautifully in the middle. Which is why despite it being aimed at normal skin types i feel it will work for everyone, besides really oily.

Scent - 5/5. The scent is light, not too strong and overpowering, it has a light delicate sweetness to it.

Effectiveness - 5/5. So far so good, my skin looks more youthful and is more hydrated, only more time to will tell.

Price - 4/5. The price is not the highest out there, but its not exactly affordable for everyone either. But considering the fantastic quality of ingredients this has the price tag is worth it.

Would i recommend? Yes! Especially if you are looking to incorporate a top quality anti-ageing oil.
